mac address ip address and its differences

When a MAC address itself is unique, why do we still need an IP address to uniquely identify a system on a network? Leave a comment

MAC ADDRESS AND IP ADDRESS

Every device has a globally unique MAC address which is assigned at the time of manufacture.

It is use full for efficient local communication, which is used to broadcast and find or communicate with other physical address.

Like, one boy(A) in a class need to communicate with a boy(B) in the same class. The only necessary thing they need to communicate is name(Here mac address).

But when more device/network join the internet communication would become impossible as everyone broadcast to find other computers.

For example, If someone sends you a postal with your name only. It is impossible to find your address ie, it is impossible to store every address related to each name in a post office.

But if we have an address like this

IND.Delhi.11thStreet62.0055.#4

Country: IND                                                State: Delhi

Street: 11thstreet                  `          Bulding number: 0055

Room number: #4

Then, it is easy to find. This is like having an IP address.

IP addresses are assigned as part of connecting to a network.IP address can group or organize different networks. It is very much like mailing address it tells where to find you. IP address only indicates where you are not who you are.

MAC addresses and IP addresses operate on different layers of the internet protocol suite. MAC addresses are used to identify machines within the same broadcast network on layer 2, while IP addresses are used on layer 3 to identify machines throughout different networks.
